How to Analyze and Use Your Instagram Insights

Instagram Insights can be an invaluable tool for your business- if you use them. How can these stats help your business grow and reach your target demographic on Instagram?  Let’s find out!

How to Get Instagram Insights

Instagram Insights come with your business account when you make your IG account a business account.  Even if you’re afraid of decreased reach, I highly suggest that you get a business account since that’s the only way to see detailed statistics about what your audience wants and when they want it.

  1. Set your profile to “Public” if it’s not already.
  2. On the mobile app, tap “Settings.”
  3. Tap “Account.”
  4. Scroll to the bottom, then tap “Switch to Business Profile/ Professional Account.”
  5. Choose the Facebook Profile you want to be associated with your IG Account.
  6. Review your business’s contact info and bio in the “Set Up Your Business Profile Page.”
  7. Tap “Done.”

How to Read IG Insights

Your Instagram Insights page is made up of three sections: Content, Activity, and Audience.

The Content section rates each piece of content on how well it’s done in terms of engagement, impressions, reach, comments, emails, follows, getting directions, likes, profile visits, saves, shares, texts and website clicks.

The Activity section tells you how many accounts were reached over the course of the week, how many overall impressions, profile visits, and website clicks your account had.

The Audience section tells you how many people followed you, unfollowed you, your top locations, the age groups of your followers, whether they’re men or women, and what days and times they are most active at.

The two main areas I want you to focus on right now are the Content and Audience sections.

What Does It Mean?

The Audience Section can help you decide on the best times to post updates and IG stories.  This also gives you valuable information on whether you should be gearing your content towards men or women and what part of the world your followers are from.  Armed with this information, you can niche down your content even further to speak to your followers.

The Content section will let you in on some valuable insights about which pieces of content performed the best, how many followers or profile visits each post resulted in and how many website clicks resulted from a single post.

You want to identify and make more of the content that people are interacting with.  This will help Instagram push your posts out to more and more people as your posts receive more engagement. Also, seeing how many profile visits, follows and website clicks were garnered by each post can inform you when you want to create an ad.

As you can see, Instagram Insights are crucial for creating and changing your content strategy and posting plan.  With Insights, you don’t have to guess about what you should create next or about what would be a good advertisement, since the information is all laid out in a clear and easy to understand manner.
